Practical

The whole project is low budget. We use recycled wood, donation materials, volunteer work.

Lifestyle-wise we are trying as much as possible green, non-consumer and sustainable living and working.

We only bike, no cars, mopeds and such.

Books people exchange, donate, borrow… even take and don’t bring back. (like in the real library, just no fines here :))
We regularly refill the boxes with written off books from two local public libraries we cooperate with. As they are obliged to buy round 300 newly published books every year, they have to discard older books and are happy to give them new life in our library.

Books we offer are mostly in Croatian language, some in Serbian, Slovenian, English, German, few in Scandinavian… that is the variety that we can find here.

We recently placed open call to our networks to send us books by snail mail in all the imaginable languages. In Arabic, Spanish, Japanese… you name it.

De-Balkanization:
As there are few thousands of foreigners living on the island, practicaly from whole EU and wider, cause of language barrier, they have no access to the richnes of the Balkan literature through history. We are highly interested in the books by Balkan writers translated into foreign languages. From classics like Ivo Andric and Mesa Selimovic, to the moderns like Bekim Sejranovic and Dubravka Ugresic, to mention just few.

We got offered free books (forgotten in the cellars and storages) by some publishers if we pay the postage fee. That we can not afford at the moment.

We recently started Rawschach Publishers, small project where we publish local handwritten books. Books for our library, small edition, more or less 10, all home printed and hand binded.
